For those interested, or those who missed it last year, Sunday night (29th) at 21:00 is Jeremy Clarkson's documentary about the 1942 St. Nazaire Raid, for
which five Victoria Crosses were awarded.
The Royal Navy and units of Army Commando under the command of Combined Operations used the destroyer HMS Campbeltown (previously USS Buchanan) which was filled with explosive, and used it to ram the lock gates at the dry dock. The main idea ws to force any large German warship - wishing to refit at St Nazaire - to return to Germany. It was particularly aimed at the Tirpitz, which the Allies feared would be moved to St Nazaire.
Any road up - it's well worth watching.
