Pond Life 80%er Posts: 4 (22/07/07 10:20:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Can someone tell me what is happening with the ASU here in Lancashire? Speaking to one of their former reps nearly a quarter of the ASU members have moved over to the T&G along with the majority of the reps. This has all happened in the space of a couple of weeks. At this rate there will be no ASU members left. The reps who are left in the ASU are the ones we never hear from which means we have no representation. It's a shame but I will be following the others over to the T&G as you cannot afford not to have proper representation. Looks like what was once a good branch has fallen apart.

You seem to be in the know on most things. Any timescales when it might be going through? Will Unison let the ASU merge with the GMB considering the history of the ASU and Unison? Does not seem to be a marriage made in heaven for ambulance staff. Looks like the only choice in the future will be between Unison (once they have swallowed the GMB and possibly the ASU) and Unite (T&G / Amicus). At the moment in Lancs most staff are moving to the T&G from the ASU because of the good reps that have moved over.

Didnt happen! Then got told it will only happen in your patch! Still didnt happen! London GMB have told the ASU and the F.T.O's for GMB to stick it where the sun dont shine. Good luck in the future!

As for the London GMB telling the ASU to stick it, are you talking about one person who hasn't even worked for the service for a decade? The man who managed to lose well over 100 of his members, but was still telling anyone who listened it was 6 members he had lost? Is this the same person who knew that as soon as any take-over happened he would lose his status and position in the union? Doesn't take a lot to work out why he doesn't want it to happen!

It sounds like a recipe for disaster. You should either stay as you are or look elsewhere. Here in Lancs staff are leaving the ASU and moving to the T&G because most of the good ASU reps have left.

Posts: 18 (30/07/07 10:14:36) Relief Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	GMB Merger receives approval from ASU General Council 20th July 2007 The General Council of the ASU met on 11th and 12th July to discuss, amongst other things, the proposed merger between the ASU and the GMB. The result of those discussions are that the General Council has voted by a clear majority to proceed to the next stage of the merger process. This involves accepting the document called the "Instrument of Transfer" (IoT). This is the legal document which covers the main terms and conditions of the transfer. In the IoT the ASU has retained its name and a major proportion of autonomy in our campaign to improve terms and conditions for all ambulance employees across the whole of the UK. The Certification Officer (CO) will now examine the IoT and once he is happy with its content it will be approved by him. Once that process is complete a full, independent postal ballot of all our members will take place and it will be that vote of the membership which will make the final decision on whether or not we conclude the merger. Information on the IoT will be circulated to all members in advance of the ballot to give people time to look at it and to raise any queries they may have about its contents.

The Instrument of Transfer will now be sent to the Trade Union Certification Officer for his approval and, once this has been achieved the ASU, as the transferring union, will conduct a ballot of all its members to seek their approval for the merger. Both the ASU and the GMB agree that this is an exciting time for ambulance members from both organisations and see this development as a major springboard for enhancing the levels of support and representation available to ambulance colleagues across the whole of the UK. I think that the total of staff within the three branches is somewhere in the region of 1000 members! The "clear majority" must mean people present at the meeting, and not the rank and file membership.

This is taken from the Unison Branch meetings minutes from June:- "Cooperative working between GMB and Unison: on a national level all General Secretaries work together and there is a need to start dialogue going on a national level to see where we can work together on pay and pensions and public services. There will be two pilots running, one in N.W England and one in Scotland. Watching the merger between ASU and GMB as this will affect how we work with GMB within the LAS." So, we have official confirmation that the unions are already looking at amalgamating. So, the scenario of the ASU joining the GMB who then in turn merge with Unison is going to happen. Why are the ASU not being more open about this so that when their members come to vote they know what they are voting for? Looks like staff will have to look to an alternative from the Unison/GMB/ASU combo or you will end up with a closed shop.

It has taken over three months to reply as I have not been on this site for nearly twelve months due to the petty namecalling and general childish behaviour by the minority who generally spoil this forum for the majority. 2. Whilst the request was limited to ASU Lancs I can comment that the ASU in LOndon are still there, msybe not on the web at the mo but still present. The ASU in lancs are now the ASU Lancs and Cumbria branch with their own space on the my space network.
